Retaining
Finding great people is hard. Training them takes time. Once you have done both, the last thing you want to do is lose them. Retaining your best people starts with creating an environment where they want to work, but it goes much deeper than keeping people happy.
People want to know what is expected of them, how they are doing, and where they can go. They want to be recognized when they perform, rewarded for the value they bring, and given opportunities to grow. They also want leaders who communicate clearly, listen to them, know when to push and when to let off the gas, and make them feel like they are part of something, not just someone filling a position.
Retention isn’t about convincing people not to leave. It’s about building the kind of culture they don’t want to leave. Take care of your people, recognize their contribution, give them a future, protect the culture, and don’t forget to have a little fun along the way. Do those things well, and you give your best people plenty of reasons to stay.
